The Localization Argumentation Destination [Patch Feedback]

I'm sure PSO2 will get a US version some time this century. Meanwhile there is a patch and this is the forum where you can discuss it and get help with issues.

Regarding the new Falz, I just noticed that it's possible that Luther could also be a reference to Lucifer (fallen angel). [Fallen] -> (Falz) Angel -> (Dark Falz) Luther (Lucifier). I'm not sure what Lucifier looks like in katakana (ルシファー ?), but if I'm not mistaken, Luther was a photoner, which would fuel his name's similarity to Lucifier. While I do believe that [Loser] is correct in reference to the transformed state ([Fallen] would work, but as far as kanji go, they seem to be the same), I do feel that Dark Falz Luther would be more appropriate for the enemy name, since the similarity to Lucifier, which would go with the fallen angel theme. (along with the soul I guess, but then again, it's a shitty soul, so you might as well leave that as Loser :P). Even if the enemy was Dark Falz Luther, the pun could remain by keeping his untransformed state as [Loser].

If [Loser] and Dark Falz Luther were to coexist though, then Dark Falz Elder's untransformed state should probably be changed back to [Colossus] since Elder was "planet-sized" (I think the kanji is a reference to something huge).

Since we're doing this:

"Do X damage Y amount of times" stage order is not fully translated.

While there could be some Luther/Lucifer connection, I think the more apt connection is to Martin Luther, which fits with the whole vaguely religious theme they were clearly going for in the design of the new Falz. There are many examples of this, including the music (pipe organ and choir gives it a religious vibe, and DF Loser's theme is called "la L'inno per il IDOLA" which is Italian for "A Hymn for the IDOLA"), names (Falz Angel, as you pointed out, the owls being described as "apostles", etc.), and appearance (DF Loser is covered in stained glass patterns).

Back in the early days before Ep2, we did not have many details, but we knew that Luther was a somewhat villainous guy, so for a while we were considering calling him Luthor.

As for the kanji names of the humanoid Falz people, we are going with the pronounced reading of the kanji. The only slight deviation from this is [Loser], as his pronounced reading is...a phonetic pun that really only works if he's called Loser and not Luther. From what I understand, it is fairly common in Japanese entertainment for creators to give important words or concepts custom pronunciations. I am by no means an expert, but it looks like this practice is called ateji maybe? I don't know. Here is a nice article explaining this concept (ignore the fact that PSO2 doesn't actually employ the katakana superscript stuff, it's still the same concept): http://legendsoflocalization.com/why-do ... uble-text/
In PSO2, this applies to the Falz people, but also to other things. An example arises in the most recent story quest when Regius gives the "absolute order" that forces the ARKS to obey his commands. The kanji meaning "absolute order" is read as "abyss" by the voice actors (explaining the whole CODE: ABYSS thing).

Long story short, [Elder] and [Apprentice] and [Persona] aren't going to change to [Large Frame] or [Young Person] or [Masked Man], even though [Loser] will remain [Loser]. Because puns.

Getting the XQ conditions to look even remotely sensible in English was an absolute nightmare, so I'm not really sure if anything can be done about that. The problem is that the bits that make up the conditions are hard-coded to be displayed in a certain order that sounds VERY BAD in English. Just be glad we don't have "within 5 times. Without dying" anymore.

Minor addition to the Falz thing: the katakana name and the kanji name are used interchangeably. All the dialogue uses the kanji one, all the enemies use the katakana one.

That one snuck in at some point. We weren't sure when it'd get used, and also had no idea how it would be used, so it stayed untranslated. The top-of-screen objectives can be reordered... if you know which string is being used for each variable.

Long story short, now we can make sense of "$(0)<c 00ffff>$(1)<yellow>$(2)<c>に<c ff007f>$(3)以上のダメージ<c>を$(4)与えろ!". Thanks!

I'll take a look at the new XQ orders, but the old ones were indeed a huge pain in the ass, so no promises.

Using the JP enemy and E-trial files doesn't appear to work. They're still in english.

I'm REALLY disappointed with the last patch. You always did a good job but the last one was a lazy translation.
I'm gonna fight Phantasy Star Online 2 most powerful Boss ever created. Yeah ! I'm gonna fight... Loser ! -_-"
First, that's pathetic. Second, that's not an accurate translation. ルーサis Luther and ルーザis Loser. That's all.
I can understand the Val/Bal Rodos issue for exemple. But here you failed. I hope you will fix that error quickly.

I'm REALLY disappointed with your reading comprehension, because I've already addressed this grievance.

You are correct that the name "Loser" is pathetic. That is the point. It is thematically appropriate, because, despite all of his aspirations and power, Luther's gambit completely failed. By the time he turns into a Falz, he has already lost. This does not mean he cannot be an intimidating boss. Furthermore, it is clear that Dark Falz [Double] (and probably the rest of the Falz people, too) do not respect him and do not count him among their ranks, instead referring to him as a "copycat loser."

Luther is a loser. It is that simple.

I have already addressed the ルーサー versus ルーザー thing. It is a pun that works very well in Japanese and not so well in English. In our opinion, it is more important to preserve than pun than to be 100% technically accurate. If you don't agree, then, well, get over it.

Also, there is nothing incorrect about Bal Rodos.
